Disruptive Capability

Along with new trends like #blackfishing disrupting the culture of the beauty community on social media, there also many other things.

I believe beauty on social media has also allowed a new way for the LGBTQ community to be represented and accepted in mainstream society.

In 2016, a male teenage beauty influencer, James Charles, became the first male Covergirl.

20 years ago, having a young male be one of the faces of a very famous cosmetic company would have been completely unheard of.

Social media allowed for James Charles to go viral and blossom in the beauty industry. A very large accomplishment in the LGBTQ community and for american culture surrounding the topic of sexuality.

In addition, social media has also completely disrupted the beauty industry in regards to where people are doing their shopping.

In 2017, online makeup shopping increased by 30 percent whereas stores like Sephora and Ulta only saw an increase of 3 percent in sales.

People are no longer depending on department stores to carry their products. They are now using social media for their makeup updates and purchasing those same products from the comfort of their own homes.
